Tackling and Preventing Exploitation

Cwm Taf Morgannwg Safeguarding Board is hosting an information and awareness raising session on exploitation. This is aimed at foster carers and those working in residential settings for children and young people.  Join this free, online session to find out about the various forms of exploitation and how to spot the signs if someone is being exploited or at risk of being exploited and what to do about it.

Understanding Exploitation

Exploitation is a serious issue that affects vulnerable adults and children and risk can be heightened for certain individuals, eg. children in a care setting.  It involves the manipulation and abuse of someone for another person's gain often with links to criminal activity linked to  financial, sexual, or other forms of abuse. This free, online session aims to equip you with the knowledge and tools to recognise, prevent and respond to exploitation effectively.

Recognising the Signs

Potential Indicators:

  • Sudden changes in behaviour
  • Secretive phone calls or social media activity
  • Unexplained absences
  • New or unexplained possessions or money
  • Increased conflict with peers or carers
  • Decline in school attendance or performance

More Subtle Signs:

  • Increased anxiety or fear
  • Withdrawal from activities
  • Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
  • Expression of feeling controlled or manipulated
  • Referencing older or more experienced 'friends'
  • Using new vocabulary or slang
