Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking

What is Modern Slavery?

Modern slavery is the exploitation of people for personal or commercial gain. It is a serious crime and a violation of human rights.

Modern slavery can take many forms, including:

Anyone can become a victim of modern slavery, regardless of age, gender, nationality or background. Victims are often controlled through threats, violence, coercion, deception or the abuse of power. Many may feel unable to leave their situation or seek help because they are frightened or dependent on those exploiting them. Modern slavery is recognised as a form of exploitation within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg region.

Modern Slavery Can Be Hidden in Plain Sight

Modern slavery is often described as a hidden crime because it can be difficult to identify. It can happen in homes, businesses, construction sites, car washes, hospitality settings, nail bars, agricultural work and within criminal networks.

Victims may not recognise themselves as victims and may be reluctant to seek help.

Spotting the Signs

The signs of modern slavery will vary, but some indicators may include:

Having little freedom of movement or contact with family and friends

Children and Modern Slavery

Children can also be victims of modern slavery and exploitation.

This may include:

Children are never responsible for their own exploitation. Safeguarding children and young people from exploitation is everyone's responsibility
